Medicare Checklist for San Antonio
Good Medicare San Antonio decisions start with good information. Almost every problem we untangle for a client traces back to one missing detail, like a drug left off a list or a specialist nobody double-checked.
Work through this checklist before you compare plans. It runs about twenty minutes and it's the same list we use with clients from Terrell Hills to Helotes.
- What to pull together before comparing plans
- Deadlines that can't slide
- Questions worth asking any San Antonio agent

Step 1
Gather your documents
- Your red, white and blue Medicare card, or your Social Security confirmation letter
- Current insurance card and plan name, if you're already covered
- Your Annual Notice of Change letter, if a plan mailed one this fall
- Creditable coverage letter from an employer, TRICARE for Life or the VA
- A rough household income figure, in case you may qualify for Extra Help
Step 2
List what you actually use
Doctors and hospital
Primary care, every specialist, and which system you lean toward. Methodist Healthcare and Baptist Health System both run large networks across San Antonio, and it matters which one your doctors sit inside.Prescriptions
Exact drug names, dosages, how often you fill them, and your preferred pharmacy. A photo of the bottles works fine if that's quicker.Expected care
A scheduled surgery, ongoing therapy or regular lab work should steer which plan you pick, not just the monthly premium.
Step 3
Know your dates
- Your 65th birthday and the 7-month Initial Enrollment Period around it
- The date your Part B starts, since that opens your 6-month Medigap window
- October 15 through December 7 for Annual Open Enrollment
- January 1 through March 31 if you're already on a Medicare Advantage plan
- Your last day of active employment, if you're delaying Part B for now
Not sure which window applies to you?
Read Turning 65 if this is new, or Switch Your Plan if you're already enrolled.
Step 4
Questions to ask any agent
A local independent agent should answer these without hesitating: Which carriers are you appointed to sell in San Antonio? Are my doctors in-network on this exact plan for next year? What will each of my prescriptions cost under this plan's formulary? What's my realistic total cost for the year, not just the sticker premium? And what happens if I need to switch later?
If the answers are fuzzy, keep looking. You can read about how we work or start with the FAQs.
Checklist finished? Let's compare plans.
Bring what you've gathered and we'll line up the San Antonio plans we represent, side by side, against your doctors and prescriptions.
